Introduction

In 2008, I already wrote a book about gomoku, The Struggle of Black and White 1, which is about the basics of gomoku. The first book introduces all the 26 standard openings with their respective theories and characteristics. This book was written in Hungarian, but its translation to English is in progress, while my second book, which is written in English is about to be finished. I recommend my first book for every player who misses the basics, the ultimate knowledge of gomoku and the second book for those who would like to be improved for a higher level. I have to pinpoint here that in order to fully understand and to be able to use in practice the content of the 2nd book, it is necessary to be familiar with the basics, what can be found in the 1st book.

The following article is only about my second book, The Struggle of Black and White 2. The introduction of The Struggle of Black and White 1 will be published later. This introduction will give an insight for the readers in order to know what this book will be about. The book’s main topic is the most popular central gomoku openings of the past few years and their respective theories. This book has several different goals. At first, I wanted to summarize my most important analyzes from my career until now; secondly I would like to give a helping hand for everyone who is interested in gomoku and of course, to popularize the game. When the idea of this book was born, I had to decide if my knowledge of gomoku theories is correct enough or not. Considering all the factors concerning the worthiness of writing, I made the conclusion that I will start to write The Struggle of Black and White 2, as my second gomoku book. I invented a lot of energy and time to create this book and to polish the included theories. Due to the complexity of gomoku, it is possible that the book contains some smaller mistakes; however I tried my best to be as close to find perfect theories as possible.

As I already mentioned, the spine of the book is got by the most popular central openings and their respective theories. The Struggle of Black and White 2 completely introduces nine openings. Besides the theories, you can read about the basics of the game and about the author. In addition, the book has a game collection, in which you can find games played from each introduced opening. Moreover, you can find different gomoku puzzles on three different levels, for beginner, intermediate and advanced players. Below, you can get a foretaste of the book and of its parts.

Since there is no need to give a sample about the secondary contents of the book, I will only give a sample of an introduced opening. Below you can see what does a discussed opening look like.

Besides the theories of an opening, the book provides information about the following things:

  • Chances: What are the chances of black and white? Which color has the advantage after the first three stones? This value is given in percentage. For example values of 90-10 stand for an almost surewin situation for black, whereas 50-50 indicates a very playable opening with both colors having approximately the same chances.
  • History: This paragraph provides information about the opening’s background. When did the opening first appear, when did it become popular, how often is it played nowadays, etc.
  • Popularity: How many players use it, how often was it played in live or online games etc. This section also includes a graph showing how often I encountered this opening along the years.
  • Complexity: The complexity of the opening is explained in two sections: First, how difficult is it to figure out the right moves without knowing the theory. Secondly, how complicated and hard are the positions in the opening stage.
  • Playability: How playable is the opening. A playable opening has lots of neither losing nor winning theories. If an opening is not considered playable, that means there are only a few possible ways, or in some cases, only one way to play the opening.
  • Game collection: This part contains my three most interesting games played from the opening in question. I will add short comments to each game trying to explain why it is memorable for me.

Hereby you can see an example for an opening:

Sample

Océane (H8-H9-L10)

  • Chances: 70-30.
  • History: Compared to other long pro openings, Océane is rather new since it was not often played during the years 2004 - 2007. Océane made its first appearance in …(continued in the book)
  • Popularity: Océane was very popular at her time. Many players used this opening in both online and live games. Its popularity faded when …(continued in the book)
  • Complexity: If someone does not know anything about the theories of Océane, it can easily become a very complicated opening, I would go as far as calling it one of the most complicated openings. Although by now the best moves …(continued in the book)
  •  Playability: Although, apart from the main theory, the chances are far from 50-50, the opening can be considered playable. The main theory is almost …(continued in the book)

The THEORIES

The 4th moves: There is one main 4th move, and there is one that can be considered ‘tricky’.

4-B:
This is the tricky 4th move. There is one way to trap black … (continued in the book)
The trap can be seen below.

5-5 appears to be a given, as it looks logical to play 5-5 and 7-7. But the following figure shows why it is not a good idea to play like that, since white … (continued in the book)

4-A:

The main 4th move or as I would say “the only 4th move worth to make”.

The diagram above shows some of the possible 5th moves. Actually, only 5-A and 5-B (which are basically the same) are important; the other 5th moves are giving away black’s advantage. Below you can see some continuations with the weaker 5th moves.

5-F:

Standard continuation. White can go 10-A and B as well, both lead to considerable white advantage. There are other possible 6th and 8th moves as well.

5-E:

Very weak 5th move, not worth to use at all. Black can play 9-C then 11-A or B or just 9-A or B, anyways; it leads to the victory or at least a considerable advantage of white.

5-D:

White can play 12-C, then 14-A or B. 12-A or B are also possible depending on the style you wish to play. Whichever move white plays, it will have a huge advantage if not an opportunity to win.

5-C:

Standard continuation. This position is very similar to the main branch of Jade. 7-A, B and C are all possible moves, but white will have a big advantage nonetheless.

5-A (and B), the main branch:

6-6 is definitely the best possible move, no need to check others. 7-7 is very important, this is a key move. If white would block black’s open three on the left side, black would have a chance to win by playing 9-A. (If black plays 5-7, then 7-5 follows and we are in the same situation.)

On the diagram, you can see two alternative 9th moves. 9-A is the main move; 9-B can be good as a surprise. You can see a standard continuation of 9-B below.

Perhaps the strongest continuation as white. 13-A and B are both possible, the situation will lead to a slight advantage for white anyways.

9-A (the main theory):

10-10 is definitely the best move, or better to say the only possible move. There are two possible 11th moves, A and B. Both are playable. You can see the branches below,

Comment: I was a bit surprised when I looked at the opening I got. My opponent put the 1st stone one intersection closer to the edge. This small change, which is actually not that small at all, can make some theories become very different. I was wondering what the changes might be, thus, I played the …(continued in the book)

You could see above what does an introduced opening look like. Of course, a discussed opening in the book is much longer with more details than in this example and there are no censored figures and “???” symbols, all the content is unlocked and public.
